dsl thru a surge protector?

I just had dsl hooked up to our router which is hooked to our server. It is working fine. I just wondered if I should run the phone line through a surge protector before it goes into the modem. I am in a rural area that gets its share of lightning surges and possibly power surges. Or would this interfere with the signal?

Probably not, it didn't when I did it. The only thing is, if you ever have problems with ur DSL your provider will probably try to blame the surge protector for the problem. Thats what they did for me.
 
If you have problems that start after installing the surge protector it's probably that causing the problem. If you don't have any trouble and down the road things start going wrong they might ask you how the modem is hooked up to the wall, tell them it's direct even if it's not. Also make sure you tell them you're using all of the cables that they provided. I ended up having the have a splitter installed in my house before things finally started working in a more stable manner.
 
When i had Verizon DSL. We had it connected though a surge protector and it was horrable. The DSL light would always blink, net would go out. I would not recommend it.
 
i would surge protect any incoming connection. i work for a company that builds small business networks (among other things) and lightning strikes are our bread and butter (we love to see lightning storms, lol). plus, i just lost a router, mother board, and other equipment due lightning coming in through a buried network cable. i need to do some surge protecting myself.

in light of the other advise given, i would recommend getting a standalone surge dedicated protector for data cables. i know they exist, but i dont know where off hand.

Thanks again. I appreciate all of the help. I plan to put a surge protector on the line and see how it goes. It is the time of the year for storms in the southeast.
