I know there would be a simple explanation to this question but I just cant figure it out.

dual monitors would be 3840 x 1080... right??

have they even made GPUs suporting that resolution? Would you need some sort of software?

If i went ahead and bought two/.three monitor and hooked them up i would get the same image on each monitor so how does it work?

you have choices. Im using some software called ultramon. allows me to have more than one taskbar, individual wallpaper or dual res wallpaper and stretched across the both. also supports triple and think 4 monitors. two dual 24" works for me. mostly for editing pictures. Originals on one screen and edit on the other.

Depends. You can run 2 monitors at their standard resolutions. However, 2 is the maximum number of monitors any current consumer card can support without SLI or Crossfire. Except for the 58XX from ATI which can support 3 monitors make them 1 large monitor using eyefinity.
