Hi, In my Dell XPS 400, i recently used a windows XP CD to repair my system. Now, it still thinks my CD is still in the machine( i think ). I have to choose between windows xp media, and windows xp setup.

How do I get rid of the setup thing?

Sounds like an entry was made in the boot.ini file. In any explorer window(not IE) you can go to the tools dropdown menu found on the menu bar and click on the folder options. Once open the view tab is next where you scroll down to uncheck the hide protected system files item.

From there look at the root of your drive for boot.ini file and right click to choose the copy option to save one in a temp folder in case you need it later. Then right click on it again to uncheck the read only box to now make the file capable of being overwritten by the correction.

When double clicking on it NotePad will open it right up for you where the two main entries are seen under the operating systems heading. One should rdisk 0 for the first drive on the system with windows media center your default version while the second will be the setup entry. Simply click on the right of the setup entry to enter the backspace key in order to remove that.

Once that is removed you simply go to the file item on the menu to choose the save as with the "all files" option not text file selected. That will overwrite the original as you will see from the confirmation prompt. Once done simply exit NotePad and right click on the corrected version to recheck and apply the read only box.
