Dual Boot Question

What I am wanting to know if it is possible to do a dual boot system with the second operating system on an exteral hard drive? I am thinking about upgrading to the new Windows 7 but on my existing hard drive it will kill most of what free space I have on there to load it on there. I was hoping that my laptop hard drive could be upgraded to a bigger one but the manufacturer states that it can only be upgraded to an extra 20 gig. It would be a lot easier if I could just put it on an external hard drive. Wouldn't that be the same as a second partition on an existing hard drive? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

You can boot an OS from an external HDD if you wish. The install would be the same as it would as an internal I believe. The only drawback would be speed I think. The externals can't transfer data as fast through USB as it can through SATA or IDE. These shouldn't effect you too much however, I don't believe.
