how would I dual boot vista and xp cuz I already have xp installed but I want to have vista installed as my second boot option (yea I'm gonna try vista) would I use partion magic and create a new partition or do you need to do a fresh install (please no:eek:)

AFAIK you cant use Vista as a secondary OS in terms of boot selection. Vista has it's own boot.ini file, so no matter what order the OS's are installed, Vista's boot.ini will appear first on the list. For instance, in your case every time you boot up the PC Vista will be the primary option, and you need to manually scroll down to the second option which is something like "boot from an older version", and then choose XP.

But you can dual-boot both OS's. If you only have one hard drive then you will need to create a new partition, and you can do so with a program such as Partition Magic.

ok thx so yea I need to create a new partition with partition magic does it know where free space is or do I have to tell it?

You would need to "take" free space from the current partition in order to create a second one. Unless you already have some unallocated space.

what do I want to make the partition ntfs right?
or should I just click install new operating system cuz it sets it to fat32
