Dual boot with Win 98

Hello, everyone!

I have been researching the procedure one must go through to install both Windows 98 and Windows XP on different partitions of the same computer. I have downloaded and installed BootIt NG in anticipation of getting Windows 98 to work (currently, I am using XP).

However, I installed Windows XP first and according to 90% of my research, I must reformat my hard drive and install Windows 98, then Windows XP, in order for this dual-boot scenario to work.

Of course, this procedure doesn't appeal to me very much. There is too much information to back up, and that other 10% is too eye-catching with possibility. I am sure there is a way to do this, but I haven't found one...

I have two drives: C: (NTFS) and G: (NTFS), and have created a FAT32 J: partition (using PM6.0) for Windows 98.

My question is, is there some way I can install Windows 98 on the J: drive without breaking my Windows XP connection?

Thank you for your help!

The thing with Windows 98, is it's not designed for a dual boot environment. First off, Win98 can detect SATA drives, so you have to use an IDE.

And if you are able to install it on the J: partition, most likely when you boot up your computer it will automatically go into 98, and you wont have an option for XP.

As far as I know, you have to install Windows XP after.

I don't think it's possible to install windows 98 after XP has already been installed, but I'm going to look into it. What do you want to do with 98 anyways? Maybe we can find an alternative.

Well, uh... for example, I'd like to run old Win98 games, like MechWarrior 2's Titanium pack. I also have other programs, which I'm told won't work on XP, which I'd nevertheless really like to have access to.

This has been an ongoing process for me recently; though I've searched for ways to run programs like these on WinXP, there are, invariably, errors and crashes and glitches. Compatibility mode rarely works, of course. Every program seems to have its own obscure technique by which it can be acquainted with XP, but I'd much rather install 98, than search for and implement all of these solutions.

Really? Well, that actually makes sense, noting the errors I've found. Heh, well, if we find that it's possible to install 98 after XP, I'll search for an IDE drive. I must have a few lying around here, somewhere...

You say you want to play games that run on Windows 98, but not on XP correct?

I haven't personally tried it, but when you install the game on XP, you can right click on the .exe of the game, click properties, compatibility, and choose for it to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98.

Correct, but like Emperor quoted... the solution is vastly different for different games. Windows 98 should, theoretically, save me much irritation. :D

Why exactly do you want to use 98?
Xp does everything it does plus more.
If you want to play with and older OS use 2000, because XP is built on 2000 Technology. 98 is build on some old distant Microsoft creation of the dark ages.
