Dual Boot

Hey, i have XP on my hard disc currently and want to be able to have linux on it as well so upon boots i ma asked which OS to load. I knwo this is possible but would i need to format my hard drive before as dont know what the partioning is set up as.?

Not necesarily acutally mandarake and SuSE use the remaining free space on your windows partitions to create the linux partitions without affecting the data on your windows partitions, just read the on screen help carefully and you will out of trouble
 
or you may be able to use partition magic to make the seperate partitions for linux before running install
 
What about fedora? I am going to buy a book today that has fedora pre-loaded on a DVD. I have XP SP2, and two HDD's, so I could run it on my second one, but I don't want to format it, I have too much stuff on it.
 
I think all the recent Linux distros have ( resize HDD without loss facilities) just stick to hte onscreen instructions and you should be out of trouble
