Dual booting XP and Linux (Xubuntu)

Hi all,

I currently have XP on my laptop and it's pretty sluggish. I have defrag'ed the hard drive, got the maximum (quantity and spec) RAM, and got minimal things running and in the startup. I think the laptop is just getting old etc, it has a reasonable spec (1.6Ghz Centrino, 2Gb RAM...).

How do I go about setting up dual boot with Xubuntu...? I will just be using it for surfing, word processing etc. Any work I will be doing on Windows. And will it run quicker than windows...?

How much hard drive space do I need. My laptop only has a 40Gb hard drive, and I only have 6Gb free. Is that enough...?

Thanks everyone!

Ubuntu is better isnt xubuntu made for older computers?

Anyways dual booting can be tricky, do you have to hard drives or one?

Nah, just the one. It is an off-the-shelf Fujistu Siemens laptop. The reason why I have Xubuntu is that I downloaded it for another (older) computer, and thought I might as well use that as I like the simplicity of it. I might download Ubuntu though, as it seems it can do all the partitioning and stuff for me as I have never tried any of that before.

Another question....

Is it possible to get rid of Unbuntu and the partition if I decide I don't like it without reformatting the HDD and losing XP..? As the laptop only came with a driver CD, or will I be able to use any XP CD to reload Windows if the laptop has the key built in?

Thanks again, Doug.

Yes, this is one of the key features of Ubuntu.
It can be Uninstalled from the Control Panel in Windows.
Getting it off the Windows Boot Manager is tricky though.

Which means that after you uninstall Ubuntu, the option is still shown in the Boot manager, but will just restart your PC if you select that option.
