Dual cable modems?

I have a question about cable modems. I currently have one hooked up which in turn is hooked up to a wireless router located in the upper level of my house. There are a few items in the basement that do not have wireless capabilities but I do have cable TV available. My question is, can I go out and buy another cable modem and using two on the same cable system??
 
My guess is no, when your cable ISP gives you an IP address it is filtered by your MAC (usually) If you know someone who has cable inet as well that would be the best way obviously to find out. borrow his modem and try it. Or call the isp.

I have a question for you is what your network looks like right now? Im assuming you have a cable modem and a wireless router. where in the house is this equipment located? Are the only things that cant connect in the basement? and is it that the devices arent wireless or the signal wont go down there?
 
You can run a wire from the router down into the basement into another router or switch, depending if you want wireless down there or not.
 
I second the NO. You are authenticated on cable by a MAC address, either the MAC of your cable modem or a MAC on a computer, so right off the bat you can see why it would not work. One modem would be authenticated the other not. The modem also aquires an ip from the ISP.
 
I have comcast cable and you can purchase additional IP's and cable modems at a cost. But yes the best course for you would be to run a cable down to the basement and hook it up to a switch and you hook all your devices to that.

Totally agree... Best & Cheapest way.
