dual channel question

I currently have 2gb (2x1gb) of PNY PC2-4300 533mhz RAM in dual channel...

I still have two RAM slots free, can I run 2x512mb Elixir PC2-4200 533mhz with them?

Will this give me 3gb, or will it break the dual channel?

I know next to nothing about RAM speeds and dual channel, just the faster the better.

You would mixing two different memory types there even though they run at the same speed. When adding more memory to a system you have to match what is already installed by knowing the specifications on the original. That avoids any compatability problems.

You would indeed have 3gb of memory, but it wouldn't be running in dual channel. However, in my own personal opinion, dual channel is hyped up to be more than it actually is- you can do more with 3gb of ram in single channel than 2gb of ram in dual channel.

Oh yeah, and the original 2gb of ram would run at PC2-4200 with the new 1gb...

Not necessarily faster, but better.

When I say fast, I'm talking physical timings. But having 3gb of memory over 2gb, at that close speed, yes, the 3gb would be a little bit faster in games, etc...

I wouldn't say single channel 3GB would be faster in games. IMO the dual channel 2GB setup would be much better for you. You'd be running a 1:1 memory ratio as well as 1T command rate.
