dual channel

Hello, I was just reading something and I saw that if you have a 1gb stick of ram (1gb total) you can't have dual-channel but if you have 2 x 512mb you can do dual channel.

so if you have 2 x 1gb ram can you do dual channel?

what if you have 1 x 512mb and 1 x 1gb ?

do the rams have to be the same exact model and all that?

thanks!

In order for Dual Channel to work, you need to have a Dual Channel capable motherboard and the RAM needs to be the same size. I've heard of people using 2 different brands for dual channel, but theres less chance of it not working if you use the same type of ram. And dual channel works for any size ram, 2x256, 2x1gb, ect.

just a little bit more about it. Dual channel is really memory controller dependent, Intel controlers tend to be more forgiving than AMDs. You can even mismatch RAM sizes with the newest Intel chipsets. That said, even if you can mismatch RAM sizes, you should always try to keep them the same for the best results
