Hi Im Kostas From Greece . Just join the forum ! :D

I have a Dual Channel problem !

I wonder.... you get a mobo with DualChannel and you get DualChannel rams.
a pair of 1gb 1066mhz and you install them in bank 0 .
then u get a pair of 512mb 1066mhz and u install them in bank 1 .

Now u r DualChannel Ready.
Dual channel gives u better performance by up to 50 % maybe ? right ? somethin like that i think . Its like the dual core prossecors . yes u have two cores but u dont have two prossecors . a core 2 duo 2.4ghz doesnt perform like two pentium 4 2.4ghz . u just get about 40% maybe better performance .
( dual core is a joke :D )

anyways . dual channel just gives u some more performance.
But what happens exactly . u have two rams 1gb and two rams 512mb . the 512mb make the system dual channel . whats my RAM amount ? 2 GB or 3GB ? do the 512 count in my total amount or the re just there to increase the systems performance ? whats goin on ? i have 2gb in dual channel or i have 3gb in dual channel ?

Now if i buy a 1gb kit dual channel ram ( 2x512 ) do i have dual channel yes or no ? or is it my ram supports dual channel but i dont have dual channel cause i dont have the setup cause two 512 cant work in dual channel ?

I never seen a computer on the market with 1.5 gb ram ( dual channel 1gb in bank 0 and 512 in bank 1 )unless of course one 512 is in bank 0 and the other one in bank 1 - but is this possible can u use two 512 in dual channel?
i think u need rams with different capacity for dual channel . one (or two ) 2gb and one ( or two ) 1gb or 1gb and 512mb or 512 and 256 etc.

Its seems that if u want dual channel u must built your pc part by part and not buy one with dual channel rams that are not in dual channel setup.

For dual channel you usually need the same size DIMM in the same bank of the 2nd channel (usually slots 1/3 and 2/4). The size doesn't matter as long as it's the same. You could use 2x256MB DIMMs if you wanted.

Some memory controllers can make a partial dual channel setup if you use different sized DIMMs.
