the pentium D's are not bad at all for their price and stands fairly well on benchmarks. however intel did admit to rushing the pentium D's into the market.

Few final questions
i'm not going to pick you out a montor thats more of a personal choice.
So you say you can go over your budget guidlines a little, lets say that your budget for the base unit is £800, and you can use the rest of your cash to buy the moniter yourself
does that sound resonable.

I didn't include a case, since that a personal choice, nor did i include a cd/dvd drive, since i didn't know if you want dvd+/-rw or whatever. (either way both are reasonably cheap)
I went over budget a touch pushing both the 3800 and the 7800gt. If its to much your probably best to drop down to a 3500+ cpu, or cut back to 6800 series to save cash.

Depends on what you're doing ... for the Premier/Lightwave/MAX stuff I do ... i found it much better on the Pentium EE 840 and slightly better on the Pentium D 840 as compared to say the X2-4400 ... but then again i have a feeling my definition of hardcore and your's is different.
