Dual core working, but only one core

Hi there! I'm not sure if any of you remember one of my last posts, "adding heatsink to CPU." Well, it worked, but now only one core works so far. I had to straighten several bent pins to even fit the processor onto the motherboard, and they all looked properly done. Mind you it took a bit of effort to pull the lever to latch the processor on.
I smothered the processor with thermal compound, and last time I checked it was 24 degress Celcius. So, I'm wondering if anyone can help me firgure out why only one core works, and whether or not the other one could maybe work? I don't think I'm willing to risk pulling the CPU from the motherboard as some of the pins might break. It is an Athlon x2 4600+ dual core. Perhaps this is time for an upgrade!
Thanks for all of your help!

bent pins - i think that is your answer, look for a replacement motherboard

i dont understand how you could have bent pins by changing the heatsink?

It's an Athlon, the pins are on the CPU ;)

I would guess that your motherboard doesn't really support dual cores, or else it just needs a bios update. What motherboard do you have?

well im sorry but all the information he gave was "changing heatsink" so in my wisdom i guessed that the rig was up and running before the change over?

if it was and its not working properly now the cpu (with its bent pins) is goosed
