I have a buddy that is running dual graphic cards via crossfire. The graphic card I have as the capability for it. What is the purpose of this? Then is it possible to run dual graphic cards off two different cards? The model I have seems to be discontinued now, so would I need to get two new ones or could I mix and match similar?

the purpose of that is you will have 2 cards running as 1, simple explanation.
when you have a gtx 670, you can't go for crossfire but sli.
and it has 2 by a second gtx 670, but its possible 2 run 2 cards from different manufactures

You can do it on one 670 but performance would suffer. 2 670s would be preferred if you are gaming on 3 monitors.

for 3 monitors, get 2 gtx 670, but depending on the resolution of youre monitors together, you com short of memory, in very demanding games.
so 2 amd 3gb cards would be better.
ore of course 3gb NVidia cards.
