Dual layer dvd

It will most likely say something like "DVD+R DL". They cost a little under $10 a piece.

The price is down to less than $2 for an average quality disk. They are much more flaky than single layer so expect a few coasters and maybe an average cost of $3 including wastage. May be a good idea to buy packs of 3 until you find a brand that works well with your burner. The max write speed will probably be 2.4x so it's a long slow burn.

At this stage in their development, I would not use them for vital information storage.

Dual layer discs will be labeled as such and it will state on the package that it is able to store 8.5 Gigs. To burn it you must have a DVD Rom recorder that supports dual layer. The average cost of a quality dual layer make is around $2 each (I never pay more). I've used both Ridata (Ritek) and Verbatim. Although the Ridata burned with no problem the result wouldn't play in my Sony player but the Verbatim have played in every player that I've tried them in. I've burned about 37 so far with no coasters. I only use dual layer on very long and large movies or Episodic's because there is nothing left to trim from the movie and 40 to 55% compression is just too much.
 
I've had a number of burn failures with Ritek DL. I've heard that Verbatim DL are good per Sophocles comment. I used to use all Verbatim cd/dvds until my local supplier stopped stocking them.
