Heres the quick scenario//pc first had windows 2k3 server - i partitioned the drive and added windows vista beta to take a look at it...i then formated the partition that had vista beta, but when i boot my pc it still shows a dual boot menu and shows vista and windows 2k3, how do i get that to go away.

since then i have installed Linux on the second partition, and that boots fine and windows 2k3 boots fine, but it still shows windows vista in the optiosn during dual boot, and its annoying me that i can't figure out where to remove this from.

When installing any "newer" version of Windows the boot.ini or other boot loader depending on what version of Windows will be altered by having a new entry added. That file now has to be edited manually to see that line pointing to Vista removed. You then save the edit as the same name file to see it overwrite the current. That will eliminate the onscreen option still being seen at post time.

I ran into this with XP Home on the primary and XP Pro on the second drive. Even with the primary set as the default boot device XP Pro would load with the option for the Home version off of the secondary. A slight edit assigning the Home version in the XP Pro boot.ini file now sees a direct to Home boot with no option for loading the Pro. Likewise I can edit the Home boot.ini to leave the option for loading Pro or just see the Home desktop come up.

but even the dual boot menu with win vista appears to be different/ i'm not sure its the same boot.ini file.

Look on the root of the 2K3 server partition to see if you find a "Boot" folder. When installing Vista on the same drive as 2K3 server you ran into the same thing as when not unplugging the primary drive here where the updated version will create entries into the mbr and on the drive itself since it is a newer version of Windows.

If 2K3 server does use a boot.ini file like XP there will only be the one seen on the primary partition at this time. If not then you will have to edit the boot loader for that version of Windows in order to locate and remove the reference to Vista. Another item is the master boot record information. That would be the other item changed when Vista was installed. On an XP system the advice to boot to the recovery console would be given to use the "Fixmbr" and "Fixboot" commands there. With an old 98SE or ME startup floppy booted from you would type "fdisk /mbr" at the dos prompt and press the enter key to correct the mbr.
