Dual monitoring

few more questions and i'm done.

First is, if I do dual monitoring, won't that kind of mess up gaming the fact that the outer screen case will be in the middle of the game screen? Do you get what I'm saying? Like if you connect them together, the outside case will be attached to the other outside case, so you have a screen+outercase+screen.

Yes. The game will be split into two, and placed on both screens. So nothing is hidden behind the middle if that's what you're saying, but it is cut down the middle so it kinda sucks with only two screens.

Second question is, Is span included in ultramon? Or only in nvidia/ati softwares specifically for span?

Thank you

No, the span pip1011261 was saying with ultramon, is that ultramon adds a button to stretch windows across all screens. Spanning in that sense just mean stretching the window across different monitors.

Span Mode is done using the driver software, NVIDIA/ATI/Matrox/etc.

So span just streches, however if I don't have it I cant stretch it. But I can still move tabs around to other screens? What if I put the tab in between both screens will that work even without span?

Where can I buy the span software?

Thank you

If you have a window, you can stretch across place it were you want and whatever. Span mode just makes windows believe the monitors are one big monitor, it will then attempt to play full screen programs accross all screens.

You mean a window? yes.

Yes.

It is included in the NVIDIA drivers and ATI drivers, which you can get the most up to date one on their websites or just use the one included with your graphics card, no need to buy anything.

So waht happens if windows is in between both monitors and I click full screen without span mode?

So span mode is not always a good option. In most cases it can be a bad option because if your playing a game, it will take up both screen, when you would only want it on 1 screen, correct?

Thank you

If you look at my 3rd screenshot you will see 2 new buttons on the window. So 5 in total. There is the "x" that closes the window, the square that maximises to 1 monitor, the "-" which minimises.

The 2 new ones are for span, which makes window go over all screens. And the other is called monitor select, which i can choose what monitor i want to move that window into with out dragging it. (these two options are from UltraMon which sniperchang said is an added button from UltraMon software)

So if you are using UltraMon you can choose between using 1 or all screen maximise by using or not using the span button. Im not sure what you are using so i cannot help you to answer fully.

The window will maximize to which ever screen most of it is in.

Well, the reason why we mentioned span mode in the first place is because people wanted to know how to make games take up all screens. So if you don't want your games to span on all monitors, just forget span mode then.

Ok, I have my PC hooked up to my 26" Vizio HDTV (DVI) running at 1360x768 and a 17" LCD (VGA) running at 1280x1024. How do I set it up for both screens to display the same image with their native resolutions?

I don't think that's possible, both screens must be the same resolution in order to clone the screens.

if you were going to do 3 way SLI could you have the master and first slave card hooked up to a HD LCD screen, then have the last slave card thats not in SLI hooked up to 2 normal LCD screens?

As you may know cards that are in SLI simply donnot do multi-display because it was designed to optimize for one screen. However if your asking if you could run two cards in SLI and one card independently, that's a very good question, and I would like to find out myself. Nvidia drivers seem to work quite smoothly with multiple graphics card and in theory it should work. However I recommend you contact Nvidia, they have really nice service and will probably answer that question.

This is the webpage to ask question in Nvidia Technical Support. I hope you'll share your findings back here!

ok, i emailed this being as detailed and as non-confusing as possible. they said they should get back to me in like 1 business day. so you (and i) shall all see the answer soon? i hope.

here is the reply (really quick eh?)

QUESTION

Customer (Trevor Sc****) 01/24/2008 07:36 PM
Dear nVidia,

Hello, my name is Trevor and i was wandering a question pertaining to Multi-screen viewing and SLI.
If i were to have 3 Graphics cards, lets say cards 1, 2, and 3; could i have cards 1 and 2 in SLI hook up and card 3 just, individual?
if i can, could i have the SLI cards hooked up to 1 High-Definition screen, and have card 3 (non-SLI and individual) produce a dual-screen setup(non High-Definition, just 2 standard LCD monitors)all on the same motherboard?
This is assuming the cards all have 2 screen out puts,(or at least just the third, individual card) and the MOBO supports 3-way SLI.
Sorry if this was confusing to you in any way, and thank you for your help.

Forever an nVidia customer,
Trevor SC****

Hello Trevor,

Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

I understand that you would like to know if you can install three graphics cards in your computer, two in SLI mode and one in individual mode and have one display connected to the SLI cards and two displays connected to the individual cards.

We are sorry, you can not have more than one display active connected to the graphics cards when SLI is enabled even if you have a third graphics card.

Please feel free to contact for any further clarifications.

Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care

well poo. that sucks. and i wanted to do a 32 inch HD monitor for games and other multi-media then have a dual set up below it for music and web while gamming, or while messing around on the computer, or for talking to you fine people. oh well.....guess its back to the design again....

Hmm, might work if you enable SLI for gaming, and disable SLI for multiple displays. All you would need to do is enable SLI before opening a game, and disable it again when in windows. Plus you wouldn't need a third card too! What do thee say to that?
