Hi, I currently have Dell Insp 700m with winxp prof. I am planning to install windows 2000 and keep both operating system in my laptop. The reason being for work flex, win 2000 offers me more functionality than xp.

Currently I have a 80gig Hrad drive with 43GB left.. can I partition it and install the win2000?? I am very skeptical about this idea  but I have 2 external Harddrives which I am thinking would be a possible way? I am not sure if it is possible being an external drive itself but any recommendations are highly appreciated..

I am also thinking about purchasing another laptop just to have it installed with Win2000 OS if nothing works out for me..

Please advice...

It is possible, with only 40Gb left, you could split it 50:50 and create a 20Gb partition to house Win2k in, or you could stick with keeping ALL your data and docs on the XP partition, simply make a small 5Gb partition, to INSTALL win2k into, once you boot into 2k you will still have access to the other partition so... its up to you. It is defiantely possible though.

The thing with external drives is that they are a bit tricky to install things to and boot from. No personal experience with ext drives but i have heard they are not exactly ideal for the job. You could always try upgrading your laptop HDD if you are worried about space, but IMO you should be just fine.

Dragon2309,

Thank you very much for your reply, I really appreciate it.. is there any site out there which offers a free software that we can download to create partitions. I tried downloading the demo version of Partition Magic but it would not allow me to apply the partition change.. (of course.. they want me to PAY!!!).. well .. I have no problem with paying but since this is only going to be a one time thing, I am thinking about it... please advise.. if there is any other way I can partition my existing 80G without re-formating or losing the data..

Thanks

I have completed my dual install... it works perfectly..

PM me if you need any help or directions..
