Dual OS System-How about Data Files?

I am thinking of having a dual boot system, using XP and 7. In such an environment, how does each system "sees" the files written on the (common)HD? Can I load a file into XP and read (or execute it if necessary) if it was originally written by 7, and visa versa?
Or do I have to keep track of which files were created by which OS and use them accordingly?
Any comments are appreciated.

Each OS will have its own partition. Anything installed on that partition will only work with the OS you installed it with.

As far as accessing data files (like pics, music, docs, etc.) either OS can access it without a problem.
