Dual vs quad

i'm so lost on this? I wouldn't mind spending more money on a quad, but can it be installed on any computer? and do i just remove the old chip and just put the new in and its ready to go?

No the motherboard has to support it and you have to have enough juice from a good power supply. What motherboard do you have?

Where are you finding a new Q6600??? Intel hasn't produced them for years.

Both used prices. As 2048megabytes said, new prices of an E8500 are insane. At $110 they really aren't worth that either, the only way is if you have a really good setup and don't want to completely upgrade to a different socket yet.

Look on ebay, there are several new ones on there. Most of them are $200 or higher.

The only reason I want to buy one is so I can get my old rig going again and either sell it or give it yo my dad. I really don't want to spend that much either but I need to do something with this rig.

no it can't be installed on just any computer, it depends what motherboard you have. If your motherboard supports quad core processors, you have to make sure it is the right one, and once you have a compatible one, then yes, you just drop the new one in

@Memory, can you not sell your current motherboard and memory and get yourself a 1156 board with an i3 and DDR3 memory? Would probably work out about the same price but be better for upgradeability and for performance compared to a C2D

You are telling me that I can upgrade to a 1156 board with an i3 and ddr3 ram for around $200 or lower? I mean the cheapest i3 cpu is $115 on newegg. I just figured it would be easier just to buy a new cpu to get it going again.

How much do you think I could sell the motherboard and ram for? The mobo is a Gigabyte p35-ds3l and the ram is OCZ 4gb(2x2).

If you can get ~ $80 for them, then you can get yourself:

which would come out at $284 inc. shipping

$274 after MIR on the motherboard

I don't know what the going price is for memory and motherboards over there though, so will have to wait for someone else to post if $80 is an attainable amount for your parts

You'd get about $30 shipped for the board, and $65-70 shipped on the ram. So deduct shipping costs, yeah right around $80.

if you're spending on a budget and you're probably wondering if you should get the dual core with the higher clocks or the quad core with lower clocks. you gotta consider what you're using it for. if it's just gaming then probably dual will do you just fine. if you're planning to do a bit more especially video editing then quad is needed.

imo, quad all the way lol
