Ok, here goes.
I live 0.5 miles (0.8km) from a free hotspot in my area.
I purchased a Linksys PCI card 54mg 802.11g.To set up to my desktop computer.
My brother, whom doesn't have much more knowledge than me installed it.
We searched for a signal and nothing.I am wondering if the strength is not strong enough.
What should I do?
Mind you, you need to go slow with me.
Kisses!:P

You wont be able to pick up a signal from a hotspot that is .5 miles away, 802.11g is only rated for several hundred feet.

I couldnt find the range on that site... It looks like it can significantly boost your signal, but i'm still skeptic that it can boost it to 0.5 miles.

agreed, you might have to wait. i doubt that you will be able to boost the signal almost a kilometre with ease.

Yuep, 1/2 a mile is way out of range. 300Ft is pushing it, so looks like you are going to have to sign up with an ISP.

A cantenna should boost a standard G signal about 3x the original range, or about 1000 feet. The new N standard for wireless should do about a quarter mile, but that's the longest, that's available to the public, that is... :)

However most likely the hotspot is only 802.11b or 802.11g, not 802.11n.

They are still having problems with 802.11n are they not?
I believe they FINALLY ironed out all the problems... Linksys and D-Link, at least, both have N routers they released in the last month. And yes, more than likely the hotspot is going to be G, but the N can be backwards compatible and pick up a little extra range beyond a standard G card could... (not much, but a little)
