Dust Filtering

First of all hello everyone, I'm new here.

I am getting my fist new computer in 9 years! Thank God! I'm getting a Dell XPS 720.

My question is.. I have a lot of pets etc. and my house is kind of old, so even if you clean a lot there is a lot of dust generated. Are there any filters made for that kind of thing, or any home methods of keeping dust out of a system?

Oh, and is it really best to keep your system on all the time? or should it be turned off at night etc?

Thanks in advance!

.Matt.

The filters posted above will work, however they will become clogged and will require cleaning eventually. IMO the best type of filters would be on the outside of the case, where it's easy to clean. However most cases dont have or allow for those types of filters, so you would need to stick with one of those, although it will help decrease the amount of dust that gets in your PC.

not very good for it leaving it on over nite. Like most things, the more u use it the less time it will last. Also windows can crash if left on too long. Not sure how long it is for XP but for windows 98 u could only leave it running 36 hours at a time max

My previous case had a dust filter on the front. It worked, but it was more of a pain than anything. Honestly if you blow your machine out every couple months, it stays pretty clean. Well, I say that just as I remember the whole front of my current computer IS a dust filter... :o

whaat?

I've had my PC on for days on end and it runs fine, my dad had a computer used every day for at least 1 hour and that only died after a power surge 5 years down the line blowing the PSU to hell. PC components are designed to last otherwise you'd need to replace servers constantly which isn't an option.

I use my machine for Folding@Home and it runs at least 15 hours a day, straight. I made filters for the CPU duct and for a case fan on the outside removeable panel with cereal boxes :P, aluminum tape, and air conditioner filter foam. The surface for each one is like 8"x10", and I have to at least blow the dust off once a month. The foam is both washable and replaceable when it does wear out.
The problem? The really fine dust still gets through and coats interior parts. :( I still need to blow everything clean with canned air twice a year.
