Ok well, i bought a dvd burner its called DVD Dual Double layer, and it has 3 icons on the rom which say DVD RW/R, RW DVD+Rewritable, and Compact disk rewritable. Does this mean it can read DVD's or just burn them?

lol no i really wasnt, because the thing is i just put in a dvd game and it wasnt reading it, i installed it my self, does this mean i put cables in the wrong place or is the dvd rom just bad? or is it missing drivers?

What operating system are you running? and is the drive SATA or EIDE? Also does it appear when you go to 'my computer'?

ok well to be honest ive had it for a while, im using XP pro atm, not sure if its SATA or EIDE but if thiers a way to check like opening my comp i will do it to let u know and no it does appear in My Computer but when i put the cd in the icon in My Comp doesnt change

IDE has a large belt looking cable and SATA has a smaller cable, a little thicker than a headphone cord. Also, on the box for your drive it should say what connection it is. When you open up your case, are there two plugs connected to the back of the drive? Make sure your computer is off and unplugged before doing anything too.

ahhh, its a IDE, i actually just now went to a site that it has on the rom and i got an update and it just flashed an update to the Rom and asked me to restart so im going to do a restart and let u know if anything happened

no the update didnt really do anything. could it be that the IDE cable is bad ?

when i put the cd in, it acts like if its loading it but then it just stops

btw i have 2 drives

Did you change the jumpers to set one as master and one as slave? (Im going to assume not)

On the back of your new drive there should be a set of 8 or 10 small pins with a plug looking clip over two of them. You need to move this plug to the 'slave' position (look on the bottom of the drive for a diagram of what each two pin set does or look in the manual that came with it). Just move the plug over to the 'slave' setting and you should be set assuming that your other drive is set to master which it should be if you never messed with it before.

ok i set the dvd rom to slave, now does the IDE cable matter? like does a certain IDE cable connect to a slave drive etc or can i just connect any IDE to it?

Just make sure the IDE cable is securely connected to both drives and the molex power cables are securely connected as well.

i tried everything but nothing still works, when i put in a cd , the little green light on the rom starts blinking but doesnt read it. Does it mean the dvd rom is dead or something? should i just buy a new one? i barely ever used this rom.

Still no icon in 'my computer'?

Next, check the jumper on your other drive and make sure it is set to 'master'

Your Ide cable should be setup so that you have (mobo)>(Drive 1 slave)>(Drive 2 Master)

no the icon has always been in my computer, just when ever i would put in a cd it wouldnt change it would just stay the same like if i never did put in a cd, and i already tried all the jumper things etc, i even took out the other cd room and put dvd as master but still didnt work :\

doesnt matter which one is master really or slave. Have you tried searching for drivers for it? Right click on 'my computer' go to 'properties' then 'device manager' and look for the dvd rom drive. click on it then go to 'properties' then 'drivers' and update the drivers, windows will search for them or you can go to the manufacturers website.
