DVD Burning...some play on DVD, some don't

So I recently got some software to burn DVD's on my DVD burner. I've got DVD Decrypter to copy actual DVD's, and use DVD Shrink to actually put it on the DVD after it is decrypted. This I have no problem with.

Now I've been burning DVDs from AVI files I have. I use WinAVI to convert the movies from AVI to DVD format. Then I use DVD Shrink to burn the video on a DVD. Half the time the movies are fine and play on my DVD player. The other half of the time, I get an error message on my DVD player (and my room mates) that says can't play dvd. It says something about being outside of the readable disc area? Just wondering if anyone had any ideas or knew of any other programs I could use that might be better. Thanks!

I had a BENQ DQ60 ( usually benq makes good dvd burners) that was junk sent it back as did a lot of other ppl. I think it was a rebranded teac. Also had one made by BTC , that was junk, unfortunately still have that one.
I bought an LG that works great, not a coaster yet. It's all what chipset they have.

I think my blank DVD's are HP's, single layer 4.7GB....i wanna say DVD-R, but I'm in the office right now, will check later. The size of the movies burned are always less than 4GB after using DVDShrink, so I don't think that's the problem. My DVD burner is shitty, it was originally a USB external DVDRW by MAD DOG, but I dissasembled it and am using it as an internal via IDE. I have a panasonic DVD player that plays SVCDS and video discs pretty well, and my roomate's Sony is pretty good. The movies seem to burn fine, just some play in the DVD player and some tell me it's outside the readable disc area. The ones that don't play on the DVD player autorun on my computer as a DVD.

i've burned like 10 movies on the same media (assuming they are DVD-R), and like half play, and half don't play. But next time I'm going with DVD+R...

Just what I thought.. Panasonic and Sony makes One of the worst DVD Players, that have compatibility issues. I myself own 3 Sony DVD players,, and about 80% of the time I can't play DVDs that I made (Movie or Home video).

Funny thing is that I paid $20 bucks for a DVD player that I got from Sears recently, and It plays all the DVDs (Burned or not burned, DVD+R and -R)..

The reason behind Sony and Panasonic is that they put lot of sensors in their DVD players which prevents DVD+R and DVD-R to play correctly or not play at all.

SO I suggest getting a cheaper DVD player if you can,,that would be the best choice,, or try to check the same dvd that you can't play to a DVD player other than Sony or Panasonic..

my understanding of dvd -r is that there is some track or sector info that on dvd -r 's is hard coded on to each blank dvd, where as on dvd +r it is written as the dvd is made.

Just tried one of my "non-working" movies on my girlfriend's Toshiba dvd player and it tells me its an "incorrect disc."

when you use dvd decryptor do you copy the movies to a file or iso.
what i do is copy to a file, Then after copied to a file I use Clone DVD to create the dvd. Have not had a bad one yet. I use to use just one program to shrink down or just copy the movie, hardly any of the movies would work, they would freeze half of the way through, I then went to putting the movies onto 2 dvd's, then I started using dvd decrypter and another program works great. I know some ppl use DD to copy to iso or other, file is the only one that would work for me.
also it could be your dvd burner . I went through 3 , that were total junk
the good burners are made by LG, NEC, LaCie , BENQ ( except for dq60) Plextor
this is what i bought

when i am just making a copy of a dvd i copy to iso then burn that and have no problems.

its when i take an avi file from my computer that i want to make a dvd out of that i have problems. i use WinAVI to convert from avi to dvd, then burn all the dvd files on the dvd using shrink

ooooh sorry. yea I tried to convert avi to dvd , i got them to burn and they played, the sound track was off. I have other stuff to do at the moment and will revist the issue someday.you might try cdfreaks.com, there are a lot of really , really knowledgeable ppl there. They more than likely know.

DVD-Rs have a much higher compatibility on dvd players than DVD+Rs. I wouldn't touch DVD+Rs with a bargepole when making DVDs to play in a set-top player.

Nope, but the difference is pretty small. DVD+Rs are compatible with about 89% of players, DVD-Rs are compatible with about 95% of players.

BTW, the problem was when I was using WinAVI, it would keep placing the default settings to PAL format instead of NTSC. The last 5 DVDs I made I double checked the NTSC setting before converting and they all turn out fine. Thanks for the help though.
