There is some thing that i have never completely understood, and was wondering iof anybody could clear this up for me?

Ok so ican burn a dvd from a Avi ect, but most films are over an hour n 20 mins, but a 4.7gb dvd wont let you put anthing that big on it in dvd quality.
how would i go about putting a film of a larger size onto a blank dvd?
do i need to compress the file and is there any good freeware packages to do that with?

you can put a movie thats above 1hr 20 min on a normal dvdr, and even at dvd quality but am sorry discussing this will be bending the forum rules at least to my knowledge

I'm not totally sure why they decided on that time. I know two hours is basically the time you can get on a typical SP setting (whatever the bit rate may be) but you can easily put more on there. My DVD recorder supports up to 8 hours if I recall correctly. But of course, the resolution and compression are dropped a good bit.

Still not figured this out
is there a software package i can compress the files with but they will still play on a dvd player?
