DVD/CD-ROM drive won't read DVD's

I have recently formatted my Acer TravelMate 3000 Series laptop and since doing so my DVD/CD-ROM drive doesn't seem to read any DVD's.

When I insert a DVD disc it makes a bit of noise and the green light at the front of the drive comes on and flashes a bit as I'd normally expect it to, however, that's it... nothing else happens after that. When I go into 'My Computer' the drive is still shown but when I double-click on it I'm just shown an empty DVD Drive folder. When I tested with DVD Films, Windows Media player displays a message saying no DVD decoder is installed. I tried installing a an nvidia DVD Decoder but it didn't help solve the problem. All CD's work perfectly fine. The model number is EOSD-0CL (External Slim Combo Drive) for your reference.

Any ideas how I can solve this?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me out.

Put a bootable dvd, possibly your OS media you used, if it is a dvd.
set your bios to boot from the cd / dvd drive and restart. If the dvd starts to boot the drive is ok, if not the drive may be bad.

you'll need the dvd decoder driver that came w/ the laptop
which should have been on the restore cd's that came w/ it
a copy of nero 6 dvd burning software will work too

..there is more wrong then missing codecs, even w/o codecs it should show the contents of the dvd

I have seen some burnt disks that certain drives didn't like. Might this be the case with yours, or are these commercial disks that can't be read?
