dvd/cd rom taking up all cpu usage

Hi guys,
Ever since I got this laptop, whenever I use the dvd rom to either burn or just copy things from the drive, it goes at normal speed but slows down all other applications..like i cant move the mouse even at a reasonable speed.

anyway, recently I installed a few widgets, one is a cpu monitor. As soon as i started burning a dvd the cpu monitor stayed on 99.9% the whole time.
Is there any settings somewhere in windows (XP) to change this? I've never had this problem with my desktop computers...this laptop isn't THAT old...(p 1.7 with over a gig ram but shared 128meg vid card).

Thanks in advance

thanks for the reply suprasteve, ill try those things but im not sure if they will help as the problem had been there for the moment I got my laptop even...

For one, I'd drop your shared VRAM if possible. I seriously doubt you need anywhere near that much. 2nd, I'd check on drivers, both video and IDE.

once again thanks for the replies, very appreciative

strangehold: where would this setting be? It cant be program specific can it because it happens with a wide range of burning programs, not just Nero.
Is it in the OS somewhere?

The_Other_one: are laptop cd drives connected via IDE? Should I reinstall the drivers using the Asus recovery cd or find the model number etc. and download the latest from the net? Are you also saying that I decrease the 128meg shared video card memory? Will this have any effect on graphic applications?

Thank you
