Hi, my DVD/CD-RW burner reads DVD movies and DVD-Rs with no problems at all, but it will not recognize a CD-R at all and can only read software and audio CDs only sometimes.

This problem occured after trying to burn an avi file to a CD-R using the Windows CD writing wizard. However, when i did this, it failed half way thru. And since, it hasn't been able to work properly with CDs.

Im pretty sure the laser isn't fried because DVDs work and I have also used a lens cleaner for my DVD player. So the only thing that makes sense to me is a software or driver problem.

Any ideas to help me would be appreciated. Thanks

Check the manufacturer website for tips, reinstall software or upgrade software. The CD-Rs may have not been burned right, or the writer was bad too. see if it will recognize on another compy

Hmm, this is just a wild speculation, but perhaps the CD laser is damaged?
Because DVD/CD burner drives have 2 lasers, 1 for DVD's and one for CD's.

Can it read any cd's. Such as cd rom games, applications. I had one which would read cd's but not dvds only sometimes and it ended up being dead and i needed a new one. May not be your problem but just put it out there.

It will read cd roms of games and applications about 50% of the time. Its CD-Rs that it wont read at all. And DVDs or DVD-Rs have no problem.

Are there 2 separate lasers for DVDs and CDs?

Yes, I told you that in the third post.

I had a similar problem when my NEC combo unit stopped recognizing CD-RWs. Only solution for me was to replace the burner. No software repair methods (firmware, burning software, XP, etc) worked.
