DVD CDRW can read DVD but cannot read CD

My drive cannot read CD's. The strange thing is that it CAN read DVD's.
I tried removing and re-installing the driver from the hardware manager - it did not work.
When I insert a CD, I get the "please insert a CD" notice.
Tried many types of CD's (original, burnt, audio etc.), they all work fine on a different computer.

Laptop details:
Compaq Presario M2000.
OS: XP SP3
Sonny CD-RW CRX835E

Thank you,
Elkon

That is odd. Not unheard of though. Found this post on Tom's Hardware. The last poster claims to have fixed the problem by changing a registry key.
I solved it.

If your winXP check your registry under: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

if there is a string labeled either UpperFilters or LowerFilters. If either of these mention "PxHelp20.sys" remove it. You should see results almost instantly.
Another way to look for this is to go into device manager and look at the properties for the drive in question. In the driver tab see if that file is mentioned...

I don't know if that would work for you or not. Do you have any bootable CDs? Like Windows XP or a Linux live-cd? I would try booting the computer w/ that to find out if the drive can in fact read CDs...

Please let me know.

deanj20 could you suggest me??

When I start my pc door of my cd open and close itself, and I have no control over there. Really I fade up from this problem. Advocate me what can I do to stop it.

Thanks in advance

Hi elkon,

I'm not sure I understand your problem - every time you start your computer the CD tray comes out and goes back in? Or are you trying what I suggested to the previous poster, but are unable to boot from CD because you're not able to insert a CD?

I would just replace the CD drive. They're very cheap these days - just call up a local computer shop. They'll give you one for cheap, possibly even free!

If you just need to try to boot from CD, just grab the tray when it comes out and hold it until you can get your CD in and then reboot to boot from CD.

Please clarify so that I may help you further.

Thanks!
