Does anyone know where I'll be able to get a free DVD converter (that can convert to avi) and that acctually works???

I'm not quite sure what you're asking there, but it's illegal if it's a commercial DVD. I don't even think backups of your own disks are allowed.

really? i didnt know that. so even a dvd you paid to own, you are stil not allowed to back it up just in case it scractes or something? hmmm this is something...
 
Well i dunno about that....as long as you paid for it and only intend to use for personel and nothing else, no business etc then i though it was ok... But to your question.. No i dont know of anything like this as haven't done it myself.
 
it is completely legal to back up your dvds, just as long as you dont distribute that dvd however encoding the dvd to avi is not as simple as clicking one button. Doom9 have some good tutorials

Some software that i have used before is pocklet DVD wizard - http://www.pocket-dvd-wizard.com/ , although as with all good software it isn't free, but it is basically as easy as one click operation, and worth paying for if nothing else out there suits your needs
EDIT: this actually only converts to wmv, and you would have to get some more software to convert to avi
