DVD drive not burning?

I've been burning some dvd's lately and have had no issues up until today. The software acts like it's burning for a few hours like normal and then it'll pop up saying that the dvd failed to burn and the troubleshooting guide is now showing. (I don't see any trouble shooting guide though.)

I'm using Ashampoo burning studio 7. Vista Home Premium, 2.4 gigahertz, 2 gig ram, the dvd burner says "Hitachi HDS721616PLA SCSI" and the discs I'm using are HP DVD+R 16x 4.7GB.

I've tried a few times today to burn and all get the same message. Looks like this :

7:29:55 PM: Preparation started
7:29:55 PM: Starting track analysis
10:29:56 PM: Track analysis completed successfully
10:29:56 PM: Preparation completed successfully
10:29:57 PM: Recording at 16x in track at once mode. The recorded DVD will not be finalized.
10:29:57 PM: Pre-buffering data...
10:30:01 PM: Prebuffering completed.
10:34:02 PM: Average write-speed: 0 KB/s or 0x.
10:34:02 PM: DVD recording completed
10:34:06 PM: Recording DVD failed

Also just now on this last try I noticed there was some weird sound coming from the burner I think. I've never heard it making any noise at all.

I've tried different discs too not just to same DVD. Anyone have any ideas????? I only bought this computer back in Sept.

Thanks for your help.

Weird noises aren't good. Chances are the drive is bad. New burners are only $30 these days.

It only made the noises that one time. Not sure what happened. I tried burning in a different software etc still no luck.

If I want to buy a new one are they easy to install?(plug and play??) and how will I know which one is best/compatible for my computer? (Emachine T5062 w/2 gig ram)

Thanks Again

Any burner will work just make sure you buy the right type of interface which yours should be IDE/ATA and not SATA. Take the bad one out and look at the cable. If it is a wide grey cable then its IDE/ATA if its a small red one, its SATA.

could be a bad batch of disks. try another brand like verbatim if you can

could be a near dead burner. before purchasing a new one assume a connection is loose. turn off the computer, open up the case, and push all the connections

if you want to buy another burner:
see if your burner uses ide or if you have extra sata slots on your motherboard. then buy the appropriate burner.

if you want something easier then buy an external burner. it's plug and play.... uses usb (preferably usb2.0 or else burning will be very slow and you can use the highest speeds).
