second hand laptop (old presario 2190US)
windows install dvd
laptop hangs and gives error about can't read from source
install dvd works fine on other pcs
tried to install from within windows, drive takes ages to load image then freezes altogether
it is a DVD rom drive (checked again ;)

if i am not mistaken, factory was just CDRW, MOBO dvd rom drivers perhaps???

copied disc contents to hard drive and install from image inside windows.
*now i have two windows installs* (separate issue :)

i can watch PAL and NTSC dvds in drive with no problems
i have more RAM than install DVD requires
I have more HD space than required

If I understand your post, you're trying to connect a dvd/cd rom player? If Windows doesn't recognize it you need to check the Device Manager to see if there's an error message. Go to Start Menu/right click My Computer/click properties/go to Hardware Tab/select Device Manager. You'll see a list of hardware connected to your system.

sorry, i musn't been uber clear. my dvdrom/cdrw combo internal drive in the laptop is giving me the problem, device manager calls everything good. the drive can be used to watch dvds, but not to install an OS from dvd image. i think this is not the original optical drive that came from factory....

cheers
