i have a dell optiplex that came with out a dvd drive, and this computer replaced my old emachine. i got to lookin, and it would fit, so i took it out, and placed it in the dell. it will read DVD's, (i originally needed it ot load photoshop), and i went to put a dvd movie in it, and the computer would recognize it, but wouldnt play it. it said i needed a decoder, so i downloaded that. then it said there was a problem with the connection between the computer, drive, and decoder. i know this is prolly due to not having any software with the drive to install, but is there a way to fix this?

i know this is prolly due to not having any software with the drive to install,
there's a huge misconception here.first off your drive does not need any software to make it run.
you will need software to play dvd's/vcd's etc etc, an easier way out of this is by using VLC, am pretty sure you've heard of it, it packs everything so it should solve your problem.
Please post back if it does not

what said you needed a decoder? windows media player?

if so then as patrick said use vlc or other software. i like using windvd for dvd vids. vlc has been freezing my build so i don't use it anymore.

i have never heard of VLC. i just put a dvd in, and this is the message that popped up:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.

and this is where i get lost. i know nothing about video cards and such. i think the message was different last time i did this, but that was almost 6 months ago.
