dvd found in bios, not in OS

My next door neighbour has just come to me with a problem which i can't figure out.

He has a laptop with a DVD RW drive and was trying to burn some DVDs and XP decided to not show the drive. He went into device manager to see if it was there and it was, all drivers and everything alright so he did a system restore and all was fine for a couple of boots, but then again, it went off of my computer and device manager and programs that burn it and it wouldn't automatically read the discs when put in. He decided then to put in the discs that came with his system (the restore discs, so it had to boot from bios) and it found and read them but had to dvd drive drivers or repairs so he couldn't use that.

Do any of you have any ideas why it could be in the bios and device manager, but not any other windows application?

Hi,

I have seen 2 machines simular, I think device manager was showing the devices (I can't be sure) but in both instances drives worked fine as you could boot from them. I tried the usual things of uninstalling the devices from device manager, letting it detect and reinstall. Did some research on google and tried a few other bits and peices. But ended up reinstall both. Couldn't find the fault. Reinstalled and were fine. I think I tried a windows repair reinstall actually (can't be 100%) and I don't think that worked. You may have to resort to a fresh install. Hope you get it resolved without needing to do that.

He has just given me his laptop to try this and no luck, it isn't in device manager either now. I will try booting my linux disc and run from disc, see if it will work doing that, if that works then i'll try running the vista repair. thanks for the input guys :)

I had the same problem...
what i did was.. i went to device manager and clicked the button which says scan for hardware changes, after that the list got refreshed and i could see the dvd drive back..
some times it did't worked and have to restart my pc and try the above step again...
wish u luck with ur drive
