dvd player not playing dvd-r

I have a home dvd player but it plays dvd-rw and not dvd-r. The instructions say it plays all dvd formats uncluding - and +. If it plays the rw's fine why doesen't it play the -'s Is there something special I have to do when copying a dvd movie to the dvd-r's

Have you tried using different media? It doesn't seem likely that it would play -RW and not -R, so it might be the media you are using.
