DVD problem

Hello i have some files that I want to back up them in DVD discs. I like DVD because experience tells me that DVD lasts the longest, now I still have some CD/DVD discs burnt in 2001 or 2000 that still work fine. I don't think an external harddisk will do so.

However, I've never tried using D9 DVD (8.5GB) so now I have some questions about that. Some people on the internet say that D9 DVD doesn't have good "stability" as D5. I don't really understand what they mean because I am not a computer professional. I don't know if they mean that a D9 DVD is more vulnerable to damage or any other things, I don't know. I would like to ask if a D9 DVD will have anything not as good as D5 DVD? (except the price XD)

Thank you.

My experience with single layer DVDs has been about 10 percent developed problems over time. I Burnt around 3000 DVDs since 2003. I was mostly buying Brands like Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Have probably gone through 7 or 8 DVD roms, of different brands, and would say the problem seems not related to the brands of Burners.

On CDR's though I have had no real problems. Probably burnt 500 or 600 hundred Music and Data CD's since about 2000, and they all still work.

On Dual Layer DVDRs, I bought a 50 pack when they came out, and about 2/3 of them had problems, so I never bought any more.

I guess I don't really trust DVDR's for precious data that can't be replaced. For general Movie type Videos though they are fine. Well until 15 minutes before the Movie Climax and the Movie freezes.:)

When that happens I got the Movies backed up in DivX files and finish the Movie on the Computer hooked up to the Flat Panel.

More important is you have stable DVD burner. Also good burn program. Also I'm curious. Why don't you use external hard drive instead of DVD DL(Dual Layber)?

My experience teaches me that DVD is probably the most reliable way to backup something. As I said I had some DVDs burnt in 2000 and now they could still be read perfectly, but I had an internal harddisk bought in 2008 that had already gone dead.

Thank you.

Just get two hard drives and raid them ;) one of the safest ways if you are willing to do it. If you want to do it with portable harddrives I cant see why it wouldn't work... Just use the idea of RAID1 if not: Back up to two disks!
