Dvd-ram ?

What purpose do DVD-RAM discs have?

I went to Walmart today and they had 2x 3 packs of DVD-RAM (Rewrite) discs w/ jewel cases for $2.00 each, so I bought both thinking it might be a good deal (originally $9.99 per 3 pack).

However, I'm not entirely sure what they're intended use is?

they're pre-dvd+/-r

they wont work in anything but a dvd-ram drive, even after being burned. they're not compatable with dvd-rom

Thanks for the info.. now I've yet another reason to invest in that Lightscribe burner I want :) (it supports 12X read/write DVD-RAM)

I don't beleive they are "pre-DVD±R", the format is too good :P Yes, it's very limited, but it's an awesome format. It basically works like a hard drive. You can read and write to the disks without have to format it each time. My DVD recorder has this feature that allows you to rewind and fastforward(IE replay) whatever's recording. However, this feature is only available when using DVD-RAM disks.

I have 55GB in discs here, does it make sense to pickup another burner that supports it? I use Vista so it natively supports them (according to wiki).. and I was already planning on buying a lightscribe burner..

If so, what burner do you recommend? I prefer an ATA/IDE, but SATA is also an option.

DVD-RAMs are for frequent writes and re-rights, much like a hard drive. If you wish to just archive something, use DVD±Rs

I'm aware of this, and I'd like to use these discs to backup files that I can later delete and replace if I choose to do so..

What burner would you recommend? I'd like DVD-RAM support and lightscribe support. ATA preferred :)

Ah, if you wish to reuse the disks, RWs would be fine.

Eh, I could look around but I'm not sure which drive is really any "better" than the other right off. I mean most are pretty much the same, besides features. I typically stuck with NEC, though I'm not sure if they make drives anymore...

Haha, well no, I'm not trying to steer you away from them so much, but they aren't the best suited for your task. I know I've had problems with them in the past. Like, I would record something on my DVD-Recorder, but I couldn't get a decent playback on my computer...

As for the drive, it looks fine. LG normally has pretty good burners

Good deal on the drive :D

As for the discs, I would like to use them to backup programs, pictures and other things that would be hard or impossible to replace if my HDD were to fail (not that it would). I wouldn't use them for playback, just as a fail-safe.

Anyways, thanks for the help :)

Bringing this back to life to ask a quick question.

Ok, I've looked and looked and see quite a few drives that support 12x DVD-RAM WRITE, but nowhere does it say they support DVD-RAM READ.. what good is write if they don't read the disc? ..and is it possible for a drive to write, but not read, a certain format? Maybe they just didn't include the DVD-RAM READ info on every DVD burner on newegg.com ?
