dvd-rom delima

i just bought my Lite_On dvd-rom burner last march and burned around 30cd-r's and 20 dvd-r's and a few cd-rw's and all read and write perfectly.

now somethings strange happened,

it reads and burns dvd-r without problems
but
cannot read and write cd-r's, even cd-rw's.
can't play vcd's too. :(

action taken,

uninstall and re-install nero 6.6.12 result same
upgrade firmware result same.
possible dvd-rom defective?

Hmmm....given that a seperate laser is used to burn DVD-Rs and CD-Rs, it is possible that your CD burning lens has gone wrong. I see that you have taken rigth action but to no avail. Simply try cleaning the lens by inserting one of those special cd cleaners in. However, it seems that the issue is more serious.

how many lens does dvd-roms have? i havent seen the inside of dvd-burners.
does it differ from common dvd-rom players?
i hate to dismatle my dvd-rom burner cause it would void the warranty sticker,
i hope it would be replaced for a new one.

my back-up dvd rom player previously can't read dvd disc but when i adjust the trimmers beneath the lens now it read perfectly on dvd and cd-r(and vcd's).
maybe a possible solution incase warranty is denied,but why so soon?
 
I had that happen to my TDK 840G. I tried to erase a RW using IMAPI and it ruined my drives capabilities to read CDs. DVDs were fine, but CDs no go.

Had to replace the drive, still under warranty :)

Ouch. I aint ever heard of that happening but with IMAPI i aint surprised
 
just for an update,

my drive was replaced WITH model
SOHW-1693s

now tested in writing and reading both cd-r and dvd are ok
writes cd-r's good
but
dvd writings now FAILS!!
its will just reach 2% and writing lead out and burning failure appears!

IS LITE-ON cd-roms QUALITY GETTING POOR???

the same thing happened to me with nero, and it turns out the cable i connected the drive to the mother board was faulty...

and yes, i dont think lite-on drives are as good as they used to be, at least its the cheap lite-on drives that are crap.. i prefer hitachi-lg drives;)
 
Or Memorex drives are a good alternative on the cheaper end... And of course, you can always go with good ol' Sony!!!
 
Lite-on is a division of Sony. One thing you must consider is that you all said you had similar problems with nero. Try other suites it may be a software issue. Sonic offers some good software, but there's always Roxio.
