thanks for the help.
but how come the cd's are being read. The drive has only one lens and if the lens failed it should have stopped reading cds too.
so my problem continues.......

I have the same problem, luckly mine is covered by dells 3 year warranty. The only problem is they ask a million questions before they send a guy out to repair it.

Is there anything i can do to troubleshoot before i get dell out?

You can try with a firmware update.

A quicker, potential solution is to uninstall the drive from Windows, reboot and let Windows automatically reinstall the device for you. To do so, (1) Control Panel, (2) System, (3) Hardware, (4) Device Manager, (5) Expand the DVD/CD-ROM Drives entry, right click on thr troublesome drive and uninstall it. Now simply reboot and let Windows try and repair itself.

Not working even after this. I think i lost my drive. maybe it is time for a new one. any way thanks for ur help.

DVD's and CD's are read on different lenses.
