Dvd rom exchange - Laptop

I dropped my gf laptop and now the dvd rom doesnt always get recognized. (In my computer sometimes its there sometimes it isnt) So i bought a new one slid it in and now im just wondering should this drive open if there is no driver installed yet?

Yes, it will open and windows will install a generic driver once it boots up. You'll be fine as long as you didn't cause more damage then just breaking the dvd rom.
