DVD ROM, plays games, CD's, but not DVD's

my Dell has a DVD ROM, it plays games and music CD's not problem, but when i try 2 play a DVD in there, the green light, on the front of the DVD ROM blinks about 10 times, then does nothing? anybody know the solution 4 this? thank you very much ;) :) .
 
The obvious... Are you 100% sure you have a DVD-ROM? Is the DVD legit? Do other DVD's of any sort work?

I know it's possible for the DVD portion of a drive to die. That happened in one of our DVD-Players once. Someone left it running a root menu for weeks, and then it wouldn't play anything but plain CD's...
 
it just played music cd's? or games? and it does say DVD-ROM right on the front. would i need some kind of software or something? also, i havent had 1 DVD play on it, i got this computer back in June, and havent tryed 2 play 1 DVD on it, til this afternoon.
 
Nah, it should just work. Under my computer, is the drive listed as a DVD-ROM? It usally says what it is...CD-R Drive, DVD-RW Drive, etc...
 
By the way, what kind of DVD did you play? A movie? It could be that your computer doesn't have DVD-playing software. My Windows Media Player 10 didn't play DVDs too last time. Try downloading Media Player Classic ;)

That is if the problem is not with your drivers..
 
Is the computer from this region? And is the DVD from the same? Some copies from overseas can be region free and some only for that region. I'd try a new DVD purchased from the store. Also, since that is a DVD Combo drive, it may not be able to read copied DVD's. You can see if there is a firmware update for that drive.

Media Player Classic is free, opensource software, it's simple and loads faster than WMP, and it has DVD-reading capability. The earlier versions of MPC used to be bundled into Windows.

Even if you have a DVD-ROM but don't have the dvd-reading software for it, you won't be able to watch DVDs. As I said previously, I couldn't watch DVDs before with WMP10 so I downloaded Media Player Classic, and it was able to read my DVDs. Funny thing is, I recently rolled back to WMP9 and it reads my DVDs fine. Weird...
 
im not sure if any software is loaded, i have WMP9 and it dont read DVD's, but you said yours does, soo the person that owned my computer before, probrably never installed the software.
 
If you want to use WMP9 to read DVDs, I think you have to buy a 3rd-party software like PowerDVD or Cyberlink(?). But why spend money when you can get a DVD-reading media player like MPC?;)

Try it out first, so you can be sure whether it's a software or hardware problem.
