DVD-ROM problem.

I just bought a game today and I need the use of my DVD-ROM. The problem is, it just won't work. I see a light blink for a second or two when I insert a disk, but after that, nothing. I don't hear the disk spinning, and when I go to "My Computer" and click on the DVD-ROM icon, it says to insert a disk.

I went to Device Manager (Control Panel>Sytem>Hardware>Device Manager), and it says I have a Samsung DVD ROM SD-616E in there. It looks normal (no alerts), and it is enabled. What could be the problem? My CD-ROM works just fine. The two are connected by a master/slave ribbon.

Edit: Oh yes, I forgot to mention that it does this with every DVD, so I know it's not just a busted DVD.

Have you got the one at the end of the cable jumper set to master and the middle ones jumper set to slave. If so go into your Device Manager, find the DVD-ROM, right click on it and click uninstall. Restart Windows and let it reinstall the driver, see if it works then.

The dvd-rom is on top of the cd-rom. The master ribbon is in the dvd-rom's slot and the slave is in the cd-rom's slot. Is that what you mean by "set to"? I just uninstalled the dvd-rom and restarted the computer. I got a bubble saying that there was new hardware found. I guess it automatically installed itself because it's on the device manager list again. It still doesn't work though :(

I went to Samsung's site yesterday and saw some firmware for this model. I downloaded it, extracted into a temp folder like it said to, opened the program that came with it, and tried to open the file (.bin I think) that came with it, but it gave me an error message. I think it said something like I don't have the proper device for it.

I get the same thing on my dvd drive. Oddly, it only seems to affect dvd games like COD4 and CnC3 etc....

I just baught a new drive.

There is jumpers on the back of the drive. The DVD that is at the end of the cable/Top should be set as master. The CD drive below it should be set to slave.
