I have a Compaq computer with a dvd-/+rw drive and when I put in a dvd ir reads the dvd and I can play the dvd. But when I put in a BLANK DVD is changes to cd drive and it is showing the dvd that is blank if full and it doesn't give em the total space on the dvd. But I think the main problem is that it recognizes it as a cd not a dvd. So now when I go to burn a dvd it tells me there is not enough space on the blank dvd. Becuase it thinks it is a cd-r. How do I avoid the computer recongnizing it as a CD-R nad not a DVD-R. It plays and displays on the explorer window that there is a dvd in the drive when it has information on it, but if it's blank It shows it as a cd.

Please help. THANKS

opens CD opens DVD

It opens and playes any recorded dvd's or CD's. It just doesn't recognize Blank DVD's it thinks they are CD-R's. It burns CD-R's it plays CD-R's and it plays DVD-R and regular DVD's it just doesn't recognise blank DVD'S

XP does not have built in DVD burning software. You need either Roxio, Nero or other burning software installed in order for your computer to recognize a blank dvd.

O.K. Maybe I explained my self wrong

I have Nero and also Roxio, but the problem is that when there is a blank DVD in the DVD drive the computer thinks its a CD and roxio or Nero say that there is not enough space on dvd-r.

I don't know if this helps any ore.

I open explorer.
On the list of drives and folders it has:

Desktop
My Computer
Presario (C:)
Presario-RP (D:)
DVD-RW Drive (E:)
Removable Drive (F:)
Removable Drive (G:)

But when I insert a blank DVD-R or any blank DVD meda IT CHANGES TO:

Desktop
My Computer
Presario (C:)
Presario-RP (D:)
CD Drive (E:)
Removable Drive (F:)
Removable Drive (G:)

As soon as I get the blank media out it goes back to the first lest.

Please help.

Thats the shortcut for making smileys. The only thing I can think of is that either you the drive's laser is faulty or you have a software issue. Try borrowing a friends burner to see if you get the same results.

If the laser is fulty would it still play DVD's. Also it burns and play cd's?

THANKS FOR THE HELP.

If the laser was faulty, it wouldn't read anything at all...

You need a special software to burn DVDs. You can buy them cheap anywhere. Google "DVD Software".

I have Nero8

I was burning dvd's and cd's, after I installed Anydvd I think it changes the drivers and that is why I can not durn DVD's. I changed the driver to the newer on and still nothing Any ideas?

Uninstall that "AnyDVD" completely and see what happens. If it worked before, I'd think it was a driver issue...

Is the OD still detected during POST?
