Dvd Videos

I formatted about 2 weeks ago.. never realised i had the problem until now. Ive never had this problem before, everytime ive formatted the dvds have just played automatically.
Anyhow, whenever i try to play a dvd, windows media player says that "Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video. Try decreasing the number of colors displayed on your monitor or decreasing the screen resolution. For additional solutions, click More Information to access the DVD Troubleshooter."
Ive tried more than 10 DVDs and it's the same problem. Ive got no problem burning the dvds or anything. i can see the files and everything on the dvd and stuff, i just cant play the video. i dont think the problem is in my screen resolution or colors either.
Why has this happened anyway? shouldnt dvds automatically be able to be played when installing xp?

If your autoplay is messed up, right-click on drive in Explorer, Properties, Auto-play tab, set as you wish. Utility, Tweak UI (Google it) is also a good way to do it.

Re colour/monitor res did you follow the advice and go to the DVD Troubleshooter?

I just checked my autoplay, seems normal. I tried recolouring and the resolution (changed colours to 16bit. didnt work, then tried reso 800x600, still didnt work) , i went to the dvd troubleshooter, wasnt much help .. all those problems in there were fine in my case.

"By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder." , every other time ive been able to play dvds.. has a dvd decoder been present? is a decoder.. software? i thought after installing xp i should be able to play dvds.. like i always have been..

I believe by default, Windows Media can NOT play dvd's. You will need a plug in or codec to make Windows Media be able to play it. So that must've been it.

Do you have any other softwares installed presently that can play it? If not, try finding a dvd media player at www.download.com

Oh alright, i got Nero Showtime.. i was thinking that was meant to play dvds.. but that doesnt work too .. shows an error saying "Internal error. Cannot build graph. The application may be installed incorrectly". It seems to play other stuff fine though.. .
i think it's my codecs, normally ive installed divx and xvid codecs, but i installed some ffdshow codec this time and used it instead of the norms.
i just tried windows media player classic, plays the dvd perfectly =) woo . thanks guys
