DVD woes

alright, i've had this DVD player for a while, but i never tried to play a dvd, now that i have tried and failed i'm mad. drivers and stuff are current. i go to play a DVD through win media and it recognizes it. but says it's an unknown format. i've tried several other "independant" players to no avail. HELP!

Have you tried Winamp or PowerDvd by Cyberlink? PowerDvd is a retail program that plays a large number of file types.

Cyberlink PowerDVD's good, but it's not free. If Winamp doesn't do it for you, try this. Read the additional requirements, though, I believe it requires some extra filters.

sweet, i'm going to try winamp. i tried power DVD. this doesn't make sense to me, why my player doesn't work.

One idea here is to use Windows Explorer to browse the disk in the dvd drive and double click on a video segment to open a new message box asking: " do you want to search the web for a program to open this file?". That will at least bring you to a site that lists a large number of file types. In the meantime I came across a tweak for Winamo, PowerDvd, and others that makes a player "region free". The reason it won't play could be due to a coding specific to a certain region. It's possible anyway. http://www.inmatrix.com/files/dvdgenie_download.shtml

none of those are working. i forgot to mention that on the rare occasion one of these plays the menu, i can click something then 2 or so seconds later it freezes and i get the blue screen, fatal error etc. running xp pro sp2.

Are you aure you don't have a bad disk? If that copy is crap no player will be able to run it. Check the underside of the disk for anything like scratches, finger smudges, and anything else that would prevent optical reading with the lazer lens in the drive. See if you can browse the disk itself with Explorer like I mentioned earlier.

Have you tried accessing any data dvds like a pc backup or just files (such as mp3) saved on disk? Those do not require a high data flow and cpu load, just when you are trying to access a file. If you can read files on a data dvd the mechanics of the drive are OK.

If it turns out just to be media dvds, then go to Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Check primary and secondary channels, right-click Properties / Advanced Settings. Your dvd drive should be something like "DMA if available" "UDMA2". If anything is PIO it needs fixing. Post for remedy.

old school. keep it on topic

I'm trying to determine the format of the files seen on the disk. WMP and other players will not run some newer file types out on various media. Mp4s, m4s, and others need specific codecs provided for those types of media.
