I put a dvd in my dvd drive, and open windows media player, and when i try to play a dvd this comes up Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information.I have my screen resolution at 1024x768 at 32-bits with a GeForce FX 5900 XT video card...I dont see what the problem is, any ideas???

My guess would be that the Video was encoding in a poor conversion forcing you to play it at a lower setting. Have you actually tried doing it to see if it worked?

In addition, I dont believe Windows Media Player by default can play DVD's. So unless you have a codec and have played DVD's on it before, it could be the problem as well.

My suggestion would be to use something other than Media Player. Try Intervideo WinDVD or Cyberlink PowerDVD. I personally think that WinDVD is the better program, but I'll leave that judgement up to you.

Can you download WinDVD for free?

I believe WMP will play a dvd by default (it's in the Play menu). Don't use it myself (PowerDVD).

What sort of dvd are you trying? Is it a commercial dvd or homemade? Have you tried several dvds from different sources? If you have standalone dvd player/tv check the dvd plays OK in that.

Most players are quite tolerant in what they will play. I have never had a commercial dvd not play, other than because someone's kids wiped it through their apple puree. Homemade dvds on cheap blanks may fail to be read by the dvd drive. You would get an error message from the player saying it could not be read the disk.

On the lines of computerhakk's comment, if the dvd was not made to the standard dvd format it may not be read (size, bit rate, video or audio formats). This would be very unlikely for a commercial dvd.
