DVD won't read

I've got an Acer TravelMate 3000 Series laptop which has an external DVD/CD-RW combo drive. When I inserted a DVD movie, Windows Media Player 10 automatically opened but then displayed a message saying I had no DVD Decoder. Hence I downloaded DivX. But even after when I inserted a Office 2007 DVD it doesn't recognise it. It's an external drive, so where can I find a driver or even for that matter get the necessary DVD decoder?

A decoder would come with something like PowerDVD. If you have some other program to play DVD videos, try using that instead of Windows Media player. As for Office 2007 not being read, I have no clue. Assuming the drive shows up on the computer, you shouldn't need any additional drivers. If the disk is good, you may have a failing drive.

also i just installed (tried) to install office 2007 on my dell and i got a can not find a cab file. I hooked up a externel drive and it worked
