DVD-Writer's life

I've just bought NEC DVD-Writer and now I'm wondering if I also use the drive to read (like watching DVDs, VCDs and read common DVDs/VCDs), will it shorten the drive's life? Or will it decrease its performance in writing? Because if so, I will have to buy another DVD drive just for the reading and let the DVD-Writer only do the writing.

Thank you very much.

most have a MTBF of around 100,000 hours, but I have seen them die well before that

they typically dont get worse slowly, just quit working altogether

look at the specs for most of them, its insanely high for those actually publish #'s

they are pretty reliable these days, I havent had one die in a long long time, 5 years maybe and that was a cdrw drive, have some that are almost 10yrs old

I know Ive burned about 2200 dvd's with 2 drives since I moved where I live now 2 years ago. They last quite awhile, isnt much to break inside really. Tray mechanism, small motor to spin the disk, laser mounted on a track with a stepper motor, rest is solid state electronics. For what they cost, its a non issue compared to other PC parts really.

I dont know how long it lasts. Maybe you can look into the brand of the product.

I have a DVD-writer/reader which I use for burning cd's, dvd's, dvd movies, vcd movies, music cd's.. etc.. the only one. Had it for about 2 years and still going. Still works perfectly fine to me.

No, not any noticible amount.

MTFB = Mean Time Before Failure
100 K hours is a long long time, there are aprox 8640 hours in a year, so if you are planning to watch nothing else but DVD movies for the next 20 years 24/7.....
As cheap as DVD DL players are, they are just like anything else made on an assembly line. Just make sure you get a good one, no specials at staples, micro center, compusa, best buy, unless you know the drive. The NEC 3550a is good, here is the drive I bought, it is an LG

...there is alot of junk out there. I first bought a BENQ DQ60, it was junk, they took it back, which is strange all of BENQs other dvd burners were great. someone said that the DQ60 is a re-branded TEAC.
