DVD5 and DVD9?

Hello I have some DVD9 disc (Single Side Double Layer) I would like to use those discs to backup some files. However, I will want to play the discs on other computer with different brand of DVD players. I would like to know if a DVD drive can read DVD5 disc, will it be very likely to read DVD9 disc too?

You'd have to find the model number of the drive and check the specifications.

One my previous DVD drives read dual layer okay but didn't like DVD-R, only DVD+R (one or the other, anyway)

From my experience, you won't have any trouble. Unless you have or will encounter some sort of old dvd reader model, then you should have no problem at all reading DVD 9's.
